defense mechanisms
Mind's protective strategies
Defense mechanisms are psychological strategies the mind uses unconsciously to protect itself from anxiety, uncomfortable thoughts, or painful emotions.
In Freudian psychology, these include repression, denial, projection, and rationalization—ways of avoiding or distorting reality to maintain emotional equilibrium.
The term has spread into everyday use to describe any habitual way someone deflects criticism or avoids confronting difficult truths: His sarcasm is just a defense mechanism.
In biology, defense mechanisms refer to physical or behavioral adaptations organisms use to protect themselves from predators.
