deboss

Stamp surface down

To deboss is to stamp or press a design into a surface so that it sits below the surrounding area—the opposite of emboss, which raises the design.

The technique appears on leather goods, book covers, business cards, and packaging: The logo was debossed into the leather wallet.

Debossed impressions create texture you can feel with your fingertips.
