deadnaming

Using abandoned name

Deadnaming is calling a transgender person by a name they no longer use—typically their birth name before transitioning.

The practice is considered disrespectful because it denies someone's identity: She accused the journalist of deadnaming her in the article.

The term emerged from transgender communities in the 2010s, where an abandoned former name is called a deadname.
