wokeness

Heightened cultural consciousness

Wokeness is awareness of social injustice, particularly regarding race, gender, and systemic inequality.

The term emerged from Black American slang where being "woke" meant staying alert to racism and its mechanisms.

In contemporary usage, wokeness often carries a negative connotation, deployed by critics to mock what they see as performative or excessive concern with progressive causes: The company's wokeness felt like marketing rather than genuine commitment.

Defenders use it neutrally or positively to describe heightened social consciousness.
