cowpuncher

Range worker horseback

A cowpuncher is a cowboy—someone who herds and tends cattle on a ranch.

The term comes from the practice of prodding cattle with poles to move them, especially when loading them onto railroad cars.

It's an informal, somewhat old-fashioned word with a rugged, Western flavor: The old cowpuncher had spent fifty years working ranches across Montana.
