buckaroo

Western saddle worker

Buckaroo is a cowboy, especially one working in the Great Basin region of the western United States.

The word comes from Spanish *vaquero* (cow herder) filtered through the ears of English speakers.

It carries a rougher, more working-class connotation than cowboy: The buckaroos rounded up strays at dawn.

In casual use, buckaroo is playful or affectionate, often directed at children: Hey there, buckaroo.
