coffered
With sunken squares
Coffered describes a ceiling or vault decorated with coffers—recessed panels, typically square or octagonal, set into the surface in a repeating pattern.
The technique appears in classical and Renaissance architecture, adding visual depth and reducing weight: the coffered dome of the Pantheon, a coffered ceiling in the library.
The panels themselves may be ornately decorated.
