coffering

Sunken ceiling panels

Coffering is the creation or installation of coffers—recessed panels, typically square or octagonal, set into a ceiling or vault.

The technique appears in classical architecture, where it reduces weight while creating decorative patterns: The dome's coffering draws the eye upward.

The term also applies to the resulting structure itself.
