wheel wells
Arched tire cavities
Wheel wells are the recessed spaces in a vehicle's body that house the wheels and allow them to move up and down with the suspension.
In cars and trucks, they're the arched cavities above each tire, often lined with plastic guards to protect against road debris.
In aircraft, wheel wells are compartments in the fuselage or wings where landing gear retracts during flight—occasionally the site of stowaways attempting desperate passage: The body was found in the wheel well of a plane from Johannesburg.
