dogfights

Close-range air battles

Dogfights are aerial battles between fighter aircraft at close range, involving tight maneuvers as pilots try to gain position on opponents: The skies over Britain were filled with dogfights during the Blitz.

The term comes from the chaotic, swirling nature of fighting dogs.

Dogfights also names the cruel practice of setting dogs against each other for sport, now illegal in most places.
