roll cage

Tubular safety frame

A roll cage is a framework of metal bars built into a vehicle to protect occupants if the vehicle rolls over.

Standard in race cars and off-road vehicles, roll cages prevent the roof from crushing inward during a crash: The roll cage saved his life when the truck flipped.

Some are bolt-in additions; others are welded permanently to the frame.
