veld

Southern African prairie

Veld is open grassland in southern Africa, especially South Africa.

The term covers various types of terrain—from the flat, treeless highveld plateau to the bushveld with its scattered trees.

The word comes from Afrikaans and Dutch, meaning field: The springbok grazed across the veld.

Also spelled veldt.
