square knot
Flat symmetrical fastening
A square knot is a simple binding knot made by tying two ends together—right over left, then left over right.
It's commonly used to join two ropes of equal thickness or to tie bandages: She secured the package with a square knot.
Also called a reef knot.
The square knot can slip or jam under heavy load, making it unreliable for critical applications.
