hitcher

Thumbs a ride

A hitcher is someone who hitchhikes—traveling by soliciting rides from passing vehicles.

The word is less common than hitchhiker but carries the same meaning: A hitcher stood by the roadside with her thumb out.

It can also refer to something that hitches or attaches to another thing.
