cascara

Pacific coast tree

Cascara is the dried bark of a buckthorn tree native to the Pacific Northwest, traditionally used as a laxative.

The Spanish word means "husk" or "shell." More recently, cascara refers to the dried skins of coffee cherries, brewed as a mildly caffeinated tea with a fruity, slightly sweet flavor: The café serves cascara alongside its espresso drinks.
