vibraphone

Vibrato metal xylophone

A vibraphone is a percussion instrument resembling a xylophone but with metal bars and motor-driven rotating disks in the resonator tubes that produce a distinctive vibrato.

The player strikes the bars with mallets and controls sustain with a foot pedal.

The instrument is prominent in jazz: The vibraphone solo floated over the rhythm section.
