timba
Havana dance hybrid
Timba is a style of Cuban popular dance music that emerged in the late 1980s and 1990s, blending traditional son and salsa with funk, hip-hop, and Afro-Cuban religious rhythms.
Known for its complex percussion, aggressive piano patterns called tumbaos, and call-and-response vocals, timba is more rhythmically intense and improvisational than conventional salsa.
The band played timba all night and the dance floor never emptied.
