cabasa
Gourd with chains
A cabasa is a percussion instrument consisting of a cylinder wrapped with steel bead chains, mounted on a handle.
The player rotates the cylinder against the beads or shakes it to produce a rattling, scraping sound.
Common in Latin American music and jazz, it creates rhythmic texture similar to maracas but with a more metallic quality: The cabasa added a shimmering pulse to the samba.
