guiro

Ridged percussion instrument

A guiro is a Latin American percussion instrument—a hollow gourd with parallel ridges carved into its surface, played by scraping a stick across the grooves to produce a rasping sound.

It appears frequently in salsa, merengue, and other Caribbean music: The guiro kept time beneath the horns.
