grand piano
Horizontal stringed keyboard
A grand piano is a large piano in which the strings and soundboard are arranged horizontally, extending away from the keyboard in a wing-shaped case.
This design produces a richer, more resonant tone than upright pianos, where the strings run vertically.
Grand pianos range from about five feet to over nine feet in length, with concert grands being the largest and most powerful.
The recital hall featured a magnificent Steinway grand piano.
