clapboard

Overlapping house planks

Clapboard is a long, narrow board used as siding on buildings, with one edge thicker than the other so boards can overlap when nailed horizontally.

The style is characteristic of traditional New England houses: a white clapboard farmhouse.

In American English, usually pronounced "KLAB-erd."
