weatherboard

Horizontal overlapping planks

Weatherboard is a horizontal plank fitted to overlap the one below it, used to clad the exterior walls of buildings.

The overlapping design sheds rain and protects the structure beneath.

In British usage, weatherboard may also refer to a sloping board at the bottom of a door that deflects water.

As a verb, to weatherboard is to fit such planks: a weatherboarded cottage.
