chosen people

God's special community

A chosen people is a group believed to be specially selected by God for a divine purpose or covenant.

The term most commonly refers to the Jewish people in biblical tradition, but other religious and ethnic groups have claimed the designation.

The concept can carry connotations of spiritual responsibility or, when used critically, accusations of exclusivity or superiority: They acted as if they were the chosen people.
