chalking
Leaving powdery residue
Chalking is marking or writing with chalk, or the marks themselves: chalking messages on the sidewalk, chalking up the score.
In billiards, chalking means applying chalk to a cue tip for better grip.
On surfaces, chalking describes the powdery residue that forms when paint or other coatings degrade: The old fence showed signs of chalking.
