pleat

Secured fabric doubling

A pleat is a fold in fabric created by doubling material back on itself and pressing or stitching it in place.

Pleats add fullness while allowing controlled draping—common in skirts, kilts, and dress pants.

To pleat is to create such folds: a pleated skirt, pleated trousers.

The accordion-like folds let fabric expand with movement.
