chalking up

Assigning a cause

Chalking up means attributing or crediting something to a particular cause or category.

You chalk up a loss to bad luck, chalk up a win to hard work, or chalk up experience points in a game.

The phrase comes from recording scores or debts on a chalkboard: Let's chalk that up to a learning experience.

To chalk up victories or achievements is to accumulate them: She's chalked up three wins this season.
