preserving
Maintaining for later
Preserving is the act of keeping something safe, intact, or in its current state.
Food is preserved by canning, drying, salting, or freezing to prevent spoilage: She spent the weekend preserving tomatoes from the garden.
Beyond food, preserving applies to maintaining anything against decay or loss: preserving traditions, preserving wildlife habitats, preserving one's dignity.
The word carries a sense of deliberate effort against natural deterioration.
