crazing
Fine crack pattern
Crazing refers to a network of fine cracks that develops on a surface, typically in ceramics, pottery glazes, or aged paint and varnish.
The pattern resembles a web or mesh of hairline fractures that don't penetrate deeply but compromise the appearance and sometimes the integrity of the finish.
In pottery, crazing occurs when the glaze and clay body expand or contract at different rates.
The term also applies to similar crack patterns in aged leather, rubber, or plastic.
The antique vase showed beautiful crazing across its blue glaze.
