center field
Diamond's deep middle
Center field is the middle section of a baseball outfield, between left and right field.
The player stationed there is the center fielder: He patrolled center field for fifteen seasons.
Figuratively, out of left field means unexpected or strange, while center field suggests the mainstream or conventional: That proposal is safely in center field.
