line drive
Hard, flat hit
A line drive is a batted ball in baseball that travels fast and relatively level, parallel to the ground rather than arcing high.
It contrasts with fly balls and grounders.
Line drives are often the hardest-hit balls and the most dangerous for fielders: He hit a line drive right back at the pitcher.
