fly ball

Outfielder's routine catch

A fly ball is a baseball hit high into the air, as opposed to a ground ball or line drive.

The fielder must judge its arc and positioning to make the catch: He hit a fly ball to center field.

Often shortened to fly: a deep fly to left.
