foul pole

Outfield corner post

A foul pole is one of two tall vertical poles at the outfield corners of a baseball field, rising from where the foul lines meet the outfield fence.

Despite the name, they mark fair territory—a ball striking the foul pole is a home run.

The poles help umpires judge whether fly balls land fair or foul.
