warning track

Fence approach zone

The warning track is a strip of dirt or gravel running along the outfield fence in baseball, alerting fielders that they're approaching the wall.

When a player feels the surface change underfoot, they know to slow down or prepare for impact.

A ball hit to the warning track almost cleared the fence: He drove one to the warning track in deep center.
