cave lion

Pleistocene big cat

The cave lion was a large prehistoric cat that roamed Europe and northern Asia during the Pleistocene epoch, going extinct roughly 12,000 years ago.

Closely related to modern lions but larger, it earned its name from the cave paintings and fossil remains found in European caves.

Cave lions likely hunted the megafauna of the Ice Age steppes.
