saber-toothed cat

Prehistoric fanged feline

A saber-toothed cat is any of several extinct predatory mammals characterized by elongated, blade-like upper canine teeth.

The most famous, *Smilodon*, roamed the Americas until about 10,000 years ago.

Despite the name, they weren't closely related to modern cats.

Often called saber-toothed tigers, though they weren't tigers either.
