fossilization
Ancient preservation process
Fossilization is the process by which organic remains become fossils—preserved in rock over millions of years through mineralization and compression.
The term extends to anything that becomes rigid, outdated, or fixed in place: the fossilization of bureaucratic procedures, intellectual fossilization.
In linguistics, fossilization describes language errors that become permanent habits in a learner's speech despite continued exposure to correct forms.
