giant deer

Prehistoric antlered megafauna

Giant deer refers to several species of exceptionally large prehistoric deer, most notably *Megaloceros giganteus*, which roamed Eurasia until about 7,500 years ago.

Also called the Irish elk despite not being an elk, it stood over six feet at the shoulder with antlers spanning up to twelve feet—the largest of any known deer.

The term sometimes applies broadly to any unusually large deer species, extinct or living.
