Asiatic lion
Indian big cat
The Asiatic lion is a subspecies of lion native to Asia, now found only in India's Gir Forest.
Smaller than African lions, males have less prominent manes that leave the ears visible.
Once ranging from the Middle East to India, the population dwindled to fewer than twenty animals before conservation efforts allowed recovery: Asiatic lions remain critically endangered despite population growth.
