saber-tooth tiger
Prehistoric fanged cat
Saber-tooth tiger is a common name for large prehistoric cats with elongated upper canine teeth, most famously *Smilodon*, which roamed the Americas until about 10,000 years ago.
Despite the name, these animals were not closely related to modern tigers.
The term evokes a fierce, primitive era: The museum's saber-tooth tiger skeleton drew crowds.
