cave bear

Prehistoric European mammal

A cave bear is an extinct species of bear that lived in Europe and Asia during the Pleistocene epoch, disappearing roughly 24,000 years ago.

Named for the numerous fossils found in caves, where they hibernated and often died.

Cave bears were comparable in size to the largest modern bears but had more vegetarian diets.
