Armored firing platform
A barbette is a fixed armored cylinder or platform on a warship, inside which a gun turret rotates.
The term originally referred to an earthwork platform allowing a cannon to fire over a parapet rather than through an embrasure.
In modern naval architecture, the barbette protects the mechanisms that rotate and elevate heavy guns: The shells penetrated the barbette and ignited the magazine below.
