cauls
Fetal head coverings
Cauls is the plural of caul, a membrane that sometimes covers a newborn's head at birth—a portion of the amniotic sac.
Folklore held that being born with a caul brought good luck or protected against drowning; sailors once bought them as talismans.
Caul also refers to the fatty membrane surrounding internal organs, especially the lacy fat around a pig's stomach used to wrap pâtés and sausages: The butcher wrapped the faggots in cauls.
