khat

East African stimulant

Khat is a plant native to East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula whose leaves are chewed as a stimulant.

The fresh leaves contain cathinone, which produces mild euphoria and alertness similar to amphetamines.

Chewing khat is a social tradition in Yemen, Ethiopia, and Somalia: They gathered in the afternoon to chew khat.
