carbonizing

Converting to carbon

Carbonizing is the process of converting organic material into carbon, typically through intense heat in the absence of oxygen.

Wood carbonizes to become charcoal; sugar carbonizes when you burn it in a pan.

The term applies both to deliberate industrial processes and to accidental burning: I carbonized the toast again.

In manufacturing, carbonizing treats materials to give them carbon-rich properties, as when steel is case-hardened by carbonizing its surface layer.
