Carboniferous

Ancient swamp epoch

Carboniferous refers to the geological period roughly 360 to 300 million years ago, when vast swamps produced the plant matter that became coal deposits.

The name literally means "coal-bearing." As an adjective, carboniferous describes rock formations or strata containing coal: carboniferous limestone, carboniferous deposits in Pennsylvania.
