burls
Prized trunk growths
Burls are rounded outgrowths on tree trunks, caused by stress, injury, or fungal infection.
The wood inside contains distinctive swirling grain patterns prized by woodworkers for decorative veneers, bowls, and furniture: a walnut burl coffee table.
As a verb, to burl is to remove knots and loose threads from cloth during finishing.
