buckeye

Horse chestnut cousin

A buckeye is a tree or shrub native to North America, related to the horse chestnut, bearing shiny brown nuts in spiny husks.

The nuts themselves are also called buckeyes—smooth, round, and resembling the eye of a deer (a buck).

The Ohio buckeye gave Ohio its nickname, the Buckeye State.

She picked up a buckeye for good luck. (Capitalized Buckeye refers to someone from Ohio.)
