root rot

Underground plant disease

Root rot is a plant disease caused by fungi or bacteria that attack the root system, typically in waterlogged or poorly drained soil.

Affected roots turn brown or black and become mushy, unable to absorb nutrients.

The condition often kills houseplants and garden plants before symptoms appear above ground: By the time the leaves yellowed, root rot had already destroyed the plant.
