broadsiding

Crashing into laterally

Broadsiding is attacking or criticizing someone forcefully and often unexpectedly, like a vehicle being struck from the side: The senator spent the debate broadsiding her opponent on immigration policy.

The term comes from naval warfare, where a broadside was the simultaneous firing of all guns on one side of a ship.
