uprocking

Upright battle dancing

Uprocking is a competitive street dance style that emerged from hip-hop culture, characterized by aggressive, confrontational movements performed face-to-face with an opponent.

Dancers use jerks, spins, and mock combat gestures—mimicking punches, burns, and dismissive motions—to symbolically battle without physical contact.

The style emphasizes attitude and improvisation: They faced off uprocking before the breaking started.

Also called rocking or Brooklyn rock, it often serves as a prelude to breakdancing battles.
